The vagina is in the centre of the so-called “Pouch of Douglas”. In patients with a history of deep sex pain, the vagina may be fused to surrounding tissues (most often the bowel).
The symptom of sex pain is simply due to the fixation of the vagina and its relative immobility. Medications will not correct this, unfortunately, though strong analgesics may temporarily numb the pain.
Surgery to correct deep sex pain is an essential part of correcting chronic pelvic pain. These patients most often experience co-existing symptoms of back pain, bowel pain and ovulation pain. This surgery undertaken by Dr Gordon is all performed by laparoscopic techniques and, as with all aspects of surgery mentioned previously, only one day in hospital is generally required before discharge.
